Our Mission

There are over 11,000 homeless men, women and children in our Nation’s Capital. During the winter months, the need for a winter coat is crucial. Aside from homelessness, food instability is the sad reality for many as well. A warm, lovingly prepared meal given by a compassionate, sincerely present person means so much to a person in need.

The mission of Sweaters & Sustenance: D.C. is to provide warmth to homeless men, women and youth in our Nation’s Capital by delivering clothing and meals through compassionate volunteerism six times a year.

Get Involved

On the next day of service, Sweaters & Sustenance will go out into different communities of Washington, D.C. to deliver warm meals and gently worn coats to homeless men, women and youth. This event is driven by community donation. Your clothing will go directly to a person in need this year and 100% of your financial donation will go to the purchase of food to be prepared for and delivered on our Day of Service. If you would like to make a direct and powerful impact on the Washington D.C. community, please consider contributing in the following ways:

Gently worn winter clothing

Coats of all sizes, hats, gloves, scarves

A financial contribution

It takes just $15 to create a meal for a homeless person during our Day of Service

Sustenance

Non-perishable or perishable food items or baked goods

A card or note

A lovingly written card or note to go with our meals and clothing

The Day of Service is not possible without compassionate and tireless volunteers. You can make this day possible by doing the following:

Volunteer opportunities for Preparation Day

  • Preparing food and packing food.
  • Writing cards to be delivered along with our goods.
  • Organizing clothing.

Volunteer opportunities for our Day of Service

  • Supporting community teams by taking pictures with given hashtags, writing Christmas and holiday cards to accompany meals, preparing meals with care prior to delivery, supporting teams in the field when supplies are needed.

Collection Days

While you can give your financial donation any day of the year, there are also many opportunities to contribute your gently worn clothing or food items.
